Rhubarb - #1 pots - Rhubarb loves cool places, even Siberia and Alaska! To winter-weary gardeners, rhubarb is especially appreciated because it's one of the first edibles to appear in the spring garden. In the kitchen, rhubarb adds a zippy signature to pies and tarts that only rhubarb can do. When combined with strawberries, raspberries, apples, and other fruits, the flavor only gets better.
Pepper Heritage Big Jim - 18/4 Paks - This new variety is actually a cross between Numex Big Jim and New Mexico 6-4. It has five times the flavor and aroma of the varieties it came from. The old Big Jim variety had "run out", losing it's signature flavor after many growing seasons. The Numex Big Jim was released by Roy Nakayama in 1975, produces mild to hot, long, thick, smooth, fleshy peppers often used for dishes such as chile rellenos. It is also listed in the Guiness Book of World Records as the world's largest chile. The old variety still had disease resistance and a great look, but no taste. The new variety boasts high yield, uniform heat level, easy de-stemming and traditional flavor. Then when you roast them the smell is much stronger and the chili flavor is so much more intense. We can hardly wait to try them!!! John is ready to till under his perennials and plant Heritage Big Jim instead!
Squash, Butternut - 4X pots - A tall squash with a figure eight shape, a yellowish-tan skin, bright orange flesh, and flavor like a sweet potato. Can be 8 to 12 inches long and 2-3 pounds.
Squash, Acorn - 4X pots - Acorn squash is a hard skinned squash with distinctive longitudinal ridges and sweet, yellow-orange flesh. Although considered a "winter" squash, acorn squash belongs to the same species as all "summer" squashes (including zucchini and yellow crookneck squash). The most common variety is dark green in color. As the name suggests, its shape resembles that of an acorn. It is also good for winter storage, keeping several months in a cool dry location such as a cellar.
Squash, Spaghetti - 4X pots - Spaghetti squash, also know as calabash squash or vegetable spaghetti, when cooked, looks like thin translucent strands of thin spaghetti. It has a mild, delicate flavor somewhat like that of yellow summer squash and watery texture. Spaghetti squash has a rounded shape and can vary in weight and size. The variety we are growing weighed almost four pounds and were about 9 inches long. When you buy Spaghetti Squash, it should have a nice lemon yellow color. If it is green it means that it is under ripe.
Tomatillo Toma Verde - 4X and 6X pots Tomatillos have that sweet tangy flavor that is essential for authentic salsa and any southwestern dishes. Prolific fruits, the size of a small tomato, are green when ripe and are encased in papery husks. 100 days to ripen. Needs full sun.
Tomato Chocolate Cherry - 4X pots As irresistible as a chocolate covered cherry, but without all of the guilt! These cherries have both skin and flesh shaded an attractive combination of port wine and chestnut with a comparably delicious and multifaceted flavor. The super productive, indeterminate plants produce trusses of tasty, 1 inch round fruit nonstop. You've got to try them just for the name!
Tomato Cherokee Purple - 6X pots This variety is very unusual because of the deep purple/red hue of its fruit. It was one of the first of the "black" color group of tomatoes. It is also unusual in being extremely popular for the sake of its flavor, instead of only its unusual color. Cherokee Purple tomatoes are beefsteak in style, with green "shoulders" across the top. They are also notable for having a dense, juicy texture, with small seed locules irregularly scattered throughout the flesh. The comparatively dark interior color is enhanced by the tendency of the seeds to be surrounded by green gel.
Tomato Health Kick - 6X pots - One of the newest introductions is 'Health Kick,' a tomato that contains 50 percent more lycopene than other tomatoes. Lycopene, one of the most powerful antioxidants, has proved helpful in preventing cancers and other diseases. 'Health Kick' is a determinate plant that grows to 4 feet high and produces deep red, plum-shaped tomatoes weighing 4 to 6 ounces. The redder the tomato, the more lycopene it contains. 'Health Kick' is also bred to resist tomato spotted wilt virus and bacterial speck.
Tomato Mr Stripey - 6X pots - This large striped tomato is a beefsteak type. The tomato's base color is a rich golden yellow and is covered with reddish-pink vertical stripes to create a very striking color combination. Mr. Stripey has a higher natural sugar content than most varieties, which allows it to masquerade as a low-acid tomato variety. This variety produces some very large tomatoes. Indeterminate. 80 days.
Tomato San Marzano - 6X pots - San Marzano tomatoes, a variety of plum tomatoes, are considered by many chefs to be the best sauce tomatoes in the world. The story goes that the first seed of the San Marzano tomato came to Campania in 1770, as a gift from the Kingdom of Peru to the Kingdom of Naples, and that it was planted in the area that corresponds to the present commune of San Marzano. They come from a small town of the same name near Naples, Italy, and were first grown in volcanic soil in the shadow of Mount Vesuvius. The volcanic soil is believed to act as a filter for water impurities. Compared to the Roma Tomatoes with which most people are familiar, Marzano tomatoes are thinner and pointier in shape. The flesh is much thicker with fewer seeds, and the taste is much stronger, more sweet and less acidic. Many people describe the taste as bittersweet, like high-quality chocolate. Because of their high quality and origins near Naples, San Marzano tomatoes have been designated as the only tomatoes that can be used for Vera Pizzaa Napoletana.
