| 2008 marks the 60th year for Welby Gardens! In the early 1940s "Grandpa" Gerace bought the land and started to farm with his horse, plow and "Grandma" along side him. Growing flowers was the farthest thing from his mind. He had to provide his family with food for the table and produce enough extra to keep them going through the winter. Times were hard, but they preserved and eventually decided to grow vegetable starts to get a jump on spring.
In 1948 the first glass greenhouse was erected for the vegetable "starts" and Welby Gardens was born. It wasn't until 1955 that the first flowers (which were Geraniums) were grown to sell at the "Market". In 1976 the Hardy Boy logo was developed and appeared on everything thereafter. In the years since 1948 many things have changed, four generations of family and many technological improvements later, Welby Gardens has grown to 1 million square feet (23 acres) of greenhouses, growing over 2,000 varieties, totaling 50 million plants to beautify Colorado and many other Western States. Two important things have remained the same, Quality and Service. We test over 2,000 varieties of plants in our 3 1/2 acre field trials and winter pansy trials. We continue to strive to grow the best quality bedding plants and perennials, try new and innovative ideas and implement techniques that will improve our products for our customers.
