Fall is one of the best times to plant.  We don't always think of autumn as the time to plant color items, but Mother Nature has always saved fall for brilliant brush strokes of color!  Mums, Asters, Flowering Cabbage and Kale, Pansies, Violas, even Dianthus and Snapdragons can be planted in the fall for beautiful color.  Many variegated  and purple or bronze foliaged herbs, grasses and perennials add to the palette.  Whimsical and decorative containers like black plastic cauldrons or beautiful rust glazed pots can create the fall ambiance you're looking for.

Pansies and Violas are one of the best plants for fall color.  Not only do they provide spectacular color thru fall, but they will bloom through winter into spring!

Hardy Boy's "New For Fall 2005" List
Pansy 'Chianti Mix' - These striped, colorful, semi ruffled blooms measure about 2-3 inches across, and begin flowering very early. Chianti blooms in rich shades of terracotta, salmon, rose and wine-red. The petal colors are uniquely marked with long, bold dark red strokes on the petals. Plants reach 8-10" high and 6-8" wide. Chianti displays long-lasting blooms on tough, vigorous compact plants. Perfect for pots, window boxes and containers.

Pansy 'Fama Ruby' - 'Fama Ruby' has medium-sized, ruby rose, blooms 2.5-3" across. They have a small dark blotch in the center of the bloom. The intensity of its flower color sets it apart from all other rose pansies. A "gem" in the field of pansies.

Pansy 'Jolly Joker' - A new improved version that's earlier to bloom and features better garden performance. The orange and purple bicolor flowers are very striking.

Pansy 'Trick or Treat Mix' - A seasonal mix of Panola orange and pure black flowering pansies. Produces many flowers for a great fall performance. Plants have a uniform habit with little stretch. Perfect to plant in the top of your Jack-o-Lantern or black cauldron!

Pansy Whiskers Orange and Whiskers Red-Gold - This one is definitely the "cat's meow". Each one of these mid-size blooms features a unique "cat face" pattern. Use in mass plantings to really grab attention! Until Whiskers arrived, this flower design could only be found on open-pollinated pansy mixes. The average flower measures 2 -2.5" across. They show excellent garden performance. Orange is a deep orange with black whiskers. Red-Gold has bright red upper petals and golden yellow lower petals with a bright red edge. Black whiskers sketch across the gold part like an Etch-A-Sketch!

Viola 'Angel Amber Kiss' - You will love the unique color and large flowers of this viola. A versatile viola that is great for year-round use. Particularly selected for cold tolerance - one of the best for overwintering. Uniform and compact plant habit with excellent disease resistance make Angels suitable for all aspects in the garden. Angel 'Amber Kiss' petals have a yellow face etched with black whiskers kissed with Autumn colored, rusty to rosey red edges.

Delphinium grandiflorum 'Summer Nights' - This dwarf series features deep blue spurred flowers in loose clusters on 8-14" plants. A very floriferous cultivar with well-branched habit, finely lobed leaves and sturdy stems. Short lived perennial. Hardy in USDA zones 3-7. Flowering in May-August.

Diascia 'Diamonte Coral Rose' and 'Lavender Pink' - This cool-season crop does great as an autumn bedding plant in the garden and mixed containers. Diamonte branches well without pinching, and is more dense and fuller growing with a better branching habit. Try using Diamonte Diascia with pansies in containers for fall color. Diamonte Coral Rose is an All America Selections Cool Season winner. Lavender Pink is the most upright of the series with good branching habit. Both varieties grow 12-14" tall by 12-14" wide in full sun or part shade.

Nemesia 'Poetry Blue' and 'Poetry White' - This Nemesia is ideal for cool-season gardens and containers. Poetry is an excellent variety. The well-branched "no pinch" plants grow fast and full, reaching a mature height of 12-14". Great companion for pansies. Will flower in winter in mild climates. Poetry Blue is a deep color with a white "eye". Poetry White is a pure white with a slight yellowish "eye". This is the most fragrant color in the series. Mix Nemesia Poetry with Stock and Violas for a fabulously fragrant fall planter!

Cyclamen and Primrose are also excellent fall choices.  In warm winter areas like Dallas, San Antonio/Austin and Houston, Texas  or Phoenix, Arizona they will overwinter outside and provide color through winter.  They also make great indoor plants blooming for many weeks in a cool, light window area.

Mother Nature doesn't stop painting her colorful pictures in the fall.  Why should you?  Give some of these plants a try this fall.  We think you will love them!
