Hakonechloa macra 'Aureola' - #1 pots ? 2009 Perennial Plant of the Year. Hakonechloa offers vivid highlights in shaded areas or in evening gardens. This grass is also noted for its movement in breezes. Individual blades are a 1/2 inch wide with bright yellow color and very thin green stripes. In the cooler days of autumn the golden foliage becomes tinged with shades of pink and red. It is used mainly for its golden foliage although it does produce tiny, inconspicuous flower spikes from late summer through mid autumn. Golden hakone grass grows 12-18 inches tall and 18-24 inches wide with an arching form. It is hardy in zones 5-9 and grows best in moist, humus rich, well-drained soils. Part shade is the optimum location in hot climates while more sun is suitable in cooler areas. It does not grow well in poorly drained heavy soils or very dry soils. Is a fabulous addition to container gardens.
Canna Intrigue Orange - #1 pots - Hardy only in warmer climates, this bold canna, a rhizomatous perennial, can be enjoyed by all gardeners when grown as an annual. 'Intrigue' produces pale-orange flowers above lush, purple foliage. Blooming all summer long and maturing to a height of 6 feet, 'Intrigue' lends a tropical feel to large containers and is spectacular when massed in the sunny border.
Canna Orange Punch - #1 pots ? A large open flower with rich orange speckles to bright yellow at the throat. Blooms almost continuously. Bright green foliage. Medium height.
Carex 'Miniature Snowline' - 4.5 inch pots - Sturdy little variegated sedge with silvery-white edged blades. Evergreen mound only 6 inches tall by about 8 inches wide. Useful in rock gardens, container plantings or as a groundcover. Prefers part shade with moisture. Competes well with tree roots. Deer resistant.
Dianthus 'Hearts Desire' - 4.5 inch pots ? Blooms of Bressingham variety. Fluffy double flowers are bubblegum pink with a darker pink eye. They bloom in mid to late spring, with a slight re-bloom in fall. A sport of 'Roseish-One' with paler pink flowers over similar glaucous blue-green foliage. Very floriferous with tidy, uniform habit. Sturdy, resilient and easy to grow. A natural for the front of a border. Great performance in containers. Full sun or part-shade in southern gardens. USDA Zone 4-8. AHS heat Zone 8-1. Plants reach 6-8 inches tall in flower by 10 inches wide in a season. Adapts cheerfully to most conditions, but good drainage and slightly alkaline soils will foster the best garden performance. Allow to dry slightly between waterings.
Dianthus 'Wicked Witch' Red - #1 pots ? The clove-scented, deep cherry red flowers rise above dense, grayish green foliage in April to June. Dianthus thrive in full sun and fast-draining soils. Great as a border or rock garden plant. Grows 6-8 inches tall and 12 inches wide. Hardy to Zone 3. It's the "wicked step-sister" to Firewitch!
Eryngium xzabellii 'Big Blue' - ‡1 pots ? Blooms of Bressingham variety. This big, bold garden accent makes most others look small and timid. Large electric-blue 4 inches blooms in June on thick, sturdy stems. The flower color extends well down onto the stems. Green, spiky foliage on erect, candelabra-shaped plants. Tremendous garden presence-impossible to overlook. Great for middle of border. Especially impressive in mass plantings. Novel container specimen and striking cut flower. Full sun. USDA Zone 5-8. AHS heat Zone 8-5. Rigid upright habit, 33 inches tall by 26 inches wide after one season. Prefers sandy loam soil, low in fertility, but adapts well to othr types. Divide with care so as not to damage roots. Deadhead for neat appearance. Do not overwater this plant.
Gaillardia aristata Sunburst Tangerine - #1 pots ? This semi-compact Gaillardia is extremely uniform, with impressive blooming power. It is an outstanding performer in containers or in the garden. The outside edge of the center forms a red ring that leads to yellow petals with an orange overcast giving Tangerine's flowers a cheery, bright color. The plant will reach 14-20 inches tall and flowers in the first year from mid-spring to fall. Grows best in sun to part shade and is hardy in Zones 3-10.
Geranium sanguineum pink - #1 pots ? Soft pink petals with red veins appear from May-September on this 8-10 inches tall hardy geranium. This type is perfectly suited to rock gardens, low borders or as a groundcover. Hardy Geraniums continue to gain popularity among gardeners who are looking for low maintenance plants. They grow in almost any climate and are hardy down to zone 4.
Hibiscus 'Cinnamon Grappa' - #1 pots ? Blooms of Bressingham variety. A whole new look for hardy garden Hibiscus - big flowers with unique foliage. Iris 'Butter and Sugar' - #1 pots ? This Siberian iris has falls of bright butter yellow between neat white standards. The large, shapely flowers are carried on 28 inch stems. 'Butter and Sugar' is an easy choice. Siberian Iris flower in mid May, to the first half of June. Their thick roots drive down deeply, which makes them drought resistant (though they also thrive in damp soil) and great plants for holding steep banks in place. Each clump can become 18-24 inches wide, and when a group of them grows together, weeds can't grow in between. They also make a nice accent around water features. After bloom, the grassy leaves stand erect and green through the growing season. Grows best in full sun. Hardy in zone 3-8.
Pennisetum setaceum 'Fireworks' - #1 pots ? Grown as an annual, this wonderful new selection will make the perfect compliment in mixed containers for sun. The white and pink striping is variable and the color changes in hot and cold weather. It is upright growing, reaching 24-30 inches tall with purple tassels in late summer above the plants.
Tradescantia 'Blueberry Sundae' - 4.5 inch pots ? The foliage is narrow shaped, pointed, slightly fleshy and green. The blooms are light blue to near white in late spring through early summer. Hardy in Zone 4-8 and grows best in part sun with average moisture.
